Screen Recording
Rubiyomi needs Screen Recording to freeze the display you peek at and crop the rectangle you draw. It does not continuously record your screen. The full freeze stays on your Mac. Rubiyomi never uploads the whole display.
Ordinary peeks stay on your Mac
- The core Peek works offline: capture, OCR, readings, basic word help, and pronunciation.
- Only the crop you draw is processed with local OCR.
- The local dictionary is curated, not complete. Unknown lines may not have a local English meaning yet.
- Speak uses a Japanese voice on your Mac. No internet required.
Optional OpenAI key
If you add your own OpenAI key, Rubiyomi can call OpenAI when you ask for help it cannot provide locally.
- Meaning and Explain more may send recognized Japanese text.
- Retry with AI sends only the cropped image you drew, and only when you click it.
- Saving a key does not upload screenshots by itself.
What Rubiyomi does not collect
- No Rubiyomi account
- No analytics SDK in v0.1
- No sync of your peeks to Rubiyomi servers
Keychain and diagnostics
Optional API keys live in the Mac Keychain. OCR Debug is off by default and only writes temporary crops on this Mac if you turn it on.
