Freeze the frame, not your flow.

Stuck on a kanji?
Peek. Keep playing.

Rubiyomi helps you read Japanese in games without leaving the game. Press ⌥Space, draw around something you cannot read, and see how to read it. Meaning stays tucked away until you ask.

The interruption

Immersion breaks when every unknown word sends you somewhere else.

game → screenshot → browser → dictionary → translation → back to game

Rubiyomi turns that into one gesture: ⌥Space, select, read, continue.

The Peek

Example: セーブしてタイトルへ戻る

Made for learning while playing

Rubiyomi does not immediately replace Japanese with English. It shows you how to read what is already there. When you need more help, ask for more.

Local first

  • The core Peek works offline: capture, OCR, readings, basic word help, and pronunciation
  • Only the rectangle you draw is processed; the rest of the display stays on your Mac
  • The local dictionary is curated, not complete. Unknown lines may not have a local English meaning yet
  • Speak uses a Japanese voice already on your Mac

AI is optional

  • Add your own OpenAI key only if you want fuller explanations or difficult OCR recovery
  • Meaning / Explain more may send recognized Japanese text
  • Retry with AI sends only the rectangle you drew, and only after you click it
  • A saved key never silently uploads peeks

FAQ

Does it pause my game?

Peek freezes a still of the display so you can draw. Your game may keep running underneath. Pin the card if you want Esc to go back to the game without closing Rubiyomi.

Does it work offline?

The core Peek works offline: capture, OCR, readings, basic word help, and pronunciation. The local dictionary is curated, so every phrase will not have a local English translation. Optional AI Meaning and Retry with AI need a network and your OpenAI key.

Does it send my screen anywhere?

No. The full freeze stays on your Mac. Ordinary OCR stays local. Retry with AI is the only image upload, and only for the rectangle you drew after you click it.

Do I need an OpenAI key?

Not for ordinary peeks. Yes for Retry with AI, and for fuller English explanations when the local dictionary does not know the line.

What games work?

Games that show Japanese on a Mac display. Compatibility varies with fullscreen and overlay quirks. There is no guaranteed list yet.

Why does it need Screen Recording?

So it can capture the area you choose. It does not continuously record your screen.

Does it teach Japanese for me?

No. It helps you read what is already on screen so you can keep playing.
